Encaustic Painting Class

Artwork

A few weeks ago, I took an encaustic painting class that was offered through the Dakota County Library system. I had first seen encaustic painting at the State Fair a few years ago, and I fell in love with it! It wasn’t completely clear to me, but the painting appeared to actually be a photograph of the woods, and the wax was painted over the photograph to look like snow. (Or the artist was incredibly talented, and the photograph was really a painting!) It was beautiful! Ever since seeing that, I’ve been really interested in trying encaustic. But the price and the supplies have made me shy away from it. So when I saw that the library was offering a class, I jumped at the chance!

I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but the class was not at all like what I thought it would be. I guess I thought maybe we would have a painting that we tried to recreate or there would be more instruction. It was basically a workshop with a table of bins full of fabric, sequins, yarn, paper scraps, and other miscellaneous things. On our tables, were glue, watercolors, and scissors. There were two women who ran it, and they passed around some paintings that they did and then gave a brief instruction about how to use the wax.

I guess I thought that we would be painting with the wax, but really we were collaging or using watercolor and then preserving the collage in wax. You could paint on colored wax afterwards, but there were only three colors to choose from and not a lot of wax (which I understand because the wax is expensive, and this class was free).

I have to admit that collage and I do not get along at all. So I thought I would try it. And I thought maybe after dipping things in the wax, they would look more interesting. I was wrong. My first collage was with the leaf and the green paper. I didn’t mind it so much before I waxed it, although it does remind me of  the art they used to have nailed to the walls in Arby’s restaurants, but after the wax, I really did not like it. For this piece, I had brushed the wax on, instead of dipping the whole thing into the wax bath.

So for next piece, I decided that the wax bath was the way to go. I grabbed an old National Geographic and found a lovely, dated photo of a woman with huge, oversized glasses. I decided that for this piece, I would go all out, glue all sorts of things together and then wax it. I think that I started out trying to make it look cool, but then gave up and decided to go as ugly as I could. In that way, I think I was very successful! After dipping the piece in wax, I was hoping to maybe scratch the wax off a bit and get a texture, but the scratching really didn’t show up well.

Overall I think the class was good, I think it was just not my kind of art. It had more of a scrapbooky-crafty type feel to it. I think a lot of people can make some amazing scrapbooks and craft things, I’m just not that person. And that’s ok with me. On the good side, I did realize during this class that the supplies I have to make candles could also be used to do encaustic painting. I think if I were to paint and use the wax as a medium, instead of just for preserving, I may like it more. And since the colored wax is so expensive, it might be fun to mix my own things into wax to get something colored. We’ll see though. I’ve got so many projects I want to start, and I’m not sure if encaustic will be high on my list.

Poor Emily!

Miscellaneous

Our naughty cat Johnny has struck again! This is his third victim, Emily. Ok. So I don’t know for sure that Johnny did bite Emily, but it seems pretty likely. It’s hard to believe that Emily suddenly became neurotic and bit herself on her tail and back badly enough to scab over. And being that Johnny has two known previous victims… I’m just saying…

So things have been a little out-of-routine at our house lately. Emily has a really hard time with the standard, plastic “Cone of Shame,” so we had to try this soft cone for her. Since she seemed to still be able to lick her tail, we tried another cone that looks like an airplane pillow, and a few different topical items that were supposed to taste so bad that they would deter her. (Nick made sure to taste test each item we put on her, and he affirmed that they were indeed, not delicious.) After all of our trial and errors, we ended up sticking with a bitter apple spray and this soft cone. I think she’s getting used to the spray, so we still need to watch her. But the healing process is well under way. Hopefully this poor girl will be back to her crazy daredevil ways in no time without a cone to slow her down!

MN Senior Care

Design

My latest design project was to create a logo for MN Senior Care Partners. This is a new business that is just starting. So I had a clean slate to begin with.

The customer gave me some information about her company, some samples of some logos that she liked, and some color ideas. Then she set me free to design. From talking with her, I knew that she liked simple designs that had meaning. So I tried to infuse meaning into everything that I showed her, which was not always easy. My first page of logos included the large logo in the center, the small red and blue logo in the upper left, and the yellowish and blue logo in the upper right. I was trying to convey a hug, holding hands, and a helping hand to try to get the idea across of comforting and helping someone.

She liked the logo in the middle, but wanted to see more ideas. And I panicked a bit! I had already been searching through existing logo ideas online, and it seemed like the competition had some really good ideas, and they were all designed well.  I had no idea what I was going to do. So I played around a bit. And I came up with some really horrible logos. But then, I came up with some ideas that I liked better than my first batch of designs. Yea!

The new batch of designs were the top middle blue and green one, the lower left and lower right logos. I really liked the top middle logo, and I even liked it when it was more abstracted to not include the oval “heads” (the lower right logo). I didn’t love the lower left design, but it was better than my previous hand idea, so I had to include it.

The customer decided that she liked the middle logo best. So after a few tweaks, it became what you see here now.

Wallpaper

Miscellaneous

Things have gotten busy this week, and I haven’t had as much time to create as I would have liked. So instead of creating, I am destroying.

Our new house was owned previously by a lover of wallpaper (or the previous previous owner was the lover, and the last owner didn’t mind it). I’m not kidding. One bathroom even has wallpaper on the ceiling. If that’s not a love of wallpaper, I don’t want to see what is!

So I have begun the task of removing said wallpaper. Since this is my first encounter with it, I started with the borders in one of the bathrooms. It was really easy to remove and only took 45 minutes to complete the entire project. Excited and hoping that everything else would go as smoothly, I moved on to the dining room. Only to find out why people hate removing wallpaper so much! It took me around 2 hours, and I only have this small chunk completed. It’s not really that it’s a difficult task, it’s just time consuming. And it seems to work best if done in layers. First I remove the top vinyl-like layer, and then I can remove the paper and glue part below. And I now have a lot of spackling to do, because I ruined the wall below it. Oops!

But when it’s all done, it will be worth it. I can’t wait!

Yoga!

Miscellaneous, Photography

It’s Monday night and that means yoga night! Yea! I started taking yoga classes from my friend/co-worker Michele. She owns Silver Birch Yoga (www.silverbirchyoga.com) and has recently started offering classes at the Metamorphosis Meditation Center in Burnsville.

If you’ve never been to the Metamorphosis Center, it’s a really interesting space. They have a smaller room where Michele likes to hold her practices, and a larger room with a labyrinth. They also sell beads, candles, socks, and other items. The labyrinth room has a fireplace, comfy chairs, and bookshelves full of books. The bookshelves are really interesting because they contain an array of books. There are books on yoga and meditation, books on finding jobs and business, and my favorite random items, a book about the TV show Lost, and Dungeons and Dragons games. I don’t understand why the books are all there, but I love it ’cause it’s so random!

My other favorite oddity is the container that has free earplugs in it right by a basket for donations. I’m sure if you’ve been to the center for an event other than one of Michele’s classes, it probably makes sense, but as an outsider, it seems really random. And I love it!

A few weeks ago, I went to class an hour earlier to meet with Michele and take photos. Unfortunately, I really need to practice taking photos indoors. I got some really cute ones of Michele, but they are all blurry. Boo! There was also this really interesting trunk sitting below a bench full of rocks, and that photo came out blurry as well. So now I have a goal. I need to practice taking indoor photos and using my flash. I need to conquer this thing! Wish me luck.
