A New Room!

Miscellaneous

Hello Friends! This summer is not slowing up to give me a chance to catch up with anything! But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

I spent the entire month of July painting one room. Granted, it was in small spurts. So it really only took a few days, but it was spread out over the entire month, and it seemed like I could never get it finished! But now, the room is done, and I think it looks very fun…and modern…if you ignore the quilt in the corner!

I have also been working hard on getting End of the Line ready so Seppy can have a printed copy to take to his next gaming-con. Things are coming along nicely, and hopefully this will soon be a reality, and I can show you what the prototype looks like, IN PRINT!

I also ran in my third race. It was a trail run. I was interested to see if I would like trail running, since I know people who love it and people who hate it. Where do I stand? I’m in the middle. I liked it because it was so twisty and turny, you never knew exactly how much farther you had to go. Which is good for me, because I have to just zone out and enjoy the run. Otherwise, I’m expecting to see the finish line at every turn and not really enjoying it, just focusing on how much farther. I didn’t like it though, because it gets crowded very easily with the pathways being really narrow. Passing people was a bit difficult, especially since you had to beware of branches and rocks that could easily twist an ankle. Two people fell in front of me, and luckily, neither were bad falls.

I’ve also been enjoying the summer. I went to a Saints game and have another coming up soon. And I’m going to Valleyfair! Should be fun!

Headshots

Photography

Last week, my friend from work, Michele, asked me if I could take some headshots for her. She recently started working at a yoga studio in St. Paul called Tula. I haven’t had a chance to go there, yet, but she has told me a lot about it, and it seems like a fun place. I’m excited to check it out!

We made the mistake of deciding to adventure for a location the day we decided to shoot. We headed to the Bruce Vento Trail in St. Paul, which neither of us had been to before. We had seen some pictures online that looked like they would provide a nice back drop. Unfortunately, the trail is somewhere around 6 miles long, and we didn’t know where those pictures were taken. After a lot of sweaty walking and passing some “interesting” people, we clicked a few shots, and headed off to Kellogg Mall in St. Paul.

I think the shoot went well and Michele has some decent photos to choose from, but I feel like all the shots are very similar. Searching for a good backdrop took a lot of time, and I think I would have been more creative if I had more time in each location. Rather than walking a bunch, getting really sweaty, and hastily picking some different spots. Good to know for next time!

Here are a few of my favorites from the shoot. These are the raw images. I haven’t had a chance to fix them up yet. They need some color balancing and a few of them could use some cropping.

The Race is Over!

Miscellaneous

This past weekend was Grandma’s Marathon, and I ran the half marathon. I finished it in 2 hours and 18 minutes. Not my best time for running, but my legs are not as sore as they had been during training. So it was a good thing that I went slower!

I ran with my best friend, Sakura, and she was good at reining me in when I started to go too quickly. We stopped once for a bathroom break and slowed down a few times for water and gels. But otherwise, we ran the entire time! That is now the farthest I have ever run in my life!

The marathon was not as scary as I had built it up in my head to be. I was really concerned about the bathroom situation, but they had plenty of port-a-potties, and maybe I got lucky, but they were not all gross when I got to them. I was also scared because I was told that the crowd never thins out. Which was true, but the road was large enough, and there were only a few times when we got stuck behind someone who was slow and we had to wait to get around them. I had to dodge and weave through people more during my 5k!

This was actually such a good experience, that I’m not opposed to running in more marathons. I liked it much more than my 5k. But part of me feels like that is because I ran in the Chocoholic Frolic, which is more of a novelty run.

And now is the best part! I get to rest and recover! Yea!

(Here are my pre and post-race pictures. Not taken by me. Note the fanny pack!)

End of the Line

Design

A few weeks ago, I shared with you that I am working on a design for the board game, End of the Line. Here is what the cards and boards look like so far. Seppy quick threw together a set to use for play testing, and I was excited to see them printed. The feedback from the play-testers was really positive, and now Fight in a Box plans to Kickstart this game next. Hooray! (I would like to say that my design is what made everyone vote for this to be the next one printed, but it’s a really good game, so I can’t take all the credit!)

Next week, Seppy and I will get together to go over the first expansion (The Inevitable Machine Revolt) and work on more of the components of the game. Things are really starting to come together, and it’s so fun to see everything getting closer to a final product!

Is That A Fanny Pack?

Miscellaneous

No, it’s a running belt! Ok, who am I kidding? Yes, yes it is…

Since signing up to run a half marathon, I have had to purchase things that I never thought I would buy, like the fanny pack above. I held out for as long as possible because, seriously, it’s a fanny pack. But finally, I had to give in when I realized that I would need a source of hydration during my long runs. The race will probably have many water stops along the way, but my local neighborhood does not. I considered knocking on people’s doors to ask for a drink of water, but after I accepted the fact that it would be more likely for me to collapse before bugging strangers for water, I swallowed my pride and made my purchase.

I have to admit that it is nice to have water when out on a long run, but wearing the pack is embarrassing. Which is pretty funny. I’m not embarrassed about the fact that my clothes don’t match, my hair has been hastily and messily piled into a ponytail, and I’m grossly dripping with sweat. But that fanny pack? Super embarrassing!

Another purchase that I’ve had to recently make is to buy energy gels. I thought I would be able to get away with not having any, but it turns out that starting out on an empty stomach depletes your stored calories pretty quickly. And if I eat before I run, I feel gross all run. So although I really don’t enjoy eating them, the gels have been really helpful to keep going.

I have less than two weeks before the big run. As of right now, I am glad that I’ve pushed myself and run farther than I ever have before, but I also feel that this will probably be my first and last half marathon. My body is not pleased with me running this far, and training really takes the fun out of it for me. But we’ll see. Maybe the energy of the crowd and excitement of the day will change my mind. I’ll let you know in about two weeks.
